What is digital accessibility?
Digital accessibility refers to a website’s ability to be used and understood by everyone, including people with disabilities.
This particularly applies to people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments.
An accessible website allows everyone to:
– Navigate using a keyboard or voice assistance
– Understand content, even with a reading disability
– Interact with forms and buttons
In other words, an accessible site is a fair site, designed for 100% of users, not a minority.
Why is digital accessibility so important?
Digital accessibility isn’t just a best practice: It’s a legal requirement, particularly in France.
– It’s a lever for inclusion, allowing everyone to access information.
– It’s also a factor in SEO performance: a clear, well-structured, and fast website ranks higher on Google.
Improving accessibility means improving the user experience for everyone, while respecting your regulatory obligations.
The June 2025 law: a new RGAA compliance obligation
The new French law, which came into force in June 2025, requires a greater number of stakeholders (companies, private and public establishments) to comply with the RGAA (version 4.1.2).
What the law says:
- All public sites and companies with a turnover of more than 2.5 million euros are affected.
- You must publish a visible accessibility statement
- A multi-year action plan must be put in place and updated
- Sanctions are now provided for in the event of obvious non-compliance
To learn more about the RGAA and legal obligations regarding digital accessibility, you can consult the official government website: accessibilite.numerique.gouv.fr
The RGAA: the French reference for digital accessibility
The General Accessibility Improvement Framework (RGAA) provides a list of technical criteria that must be met to make a website truly accessible. Key points include:
- Adding text alternatives to images
- Keyboard navigation without blocking
- Clear organization of titles, sections and buttons
- Readable contrasts between texts and backgrounds
The RGAA is no longer limited to public bodies.
All businesses are now encouraged (and sometimes required) to comply with it.
